History

This Smithsonian Institution is the largest museum complex in the world.  It includes 16 museums and Washington's National Zoo.  But the building that most people identify with the Smithsonian is the 1855 Castle, where Joseph Henry, the first Secretary of the Smithsonian, lived with this family and where the original exhibit hall was located.

Built of red sandstone from Maryland in a style that combines Romanesque and Gothic features, the Castle was designed by James Renwick, the same architect who designed St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.  It is now home to the museum's administrative offices and information center.  It also includes a crypt where the bones of James Smithson, the walthy English scientist who was the Institution's original benefactor, are buried.
