History

A view of the eastern facade of George Washington's home.

During the Civil War, soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies would often visit Mount Vernon when they weren't engaged in battle.  It is said that as a sign of respect, they wore cloaks over their uniforms and left their weapons at the main gate.  Soldiers who would normally have been shooting at each other put their differences aside in tribute to this great American and his home.

The historians at Mount Vernon were particularly happy with this painting because although it was folk art, it made use of perspective and of light and dark shadows.  They remarked at how even the sheep and cows had character.
