The extensive deep-water fishing grounds off the Massachusetts coast made Boston a major fishing port where haddock, mackerel, and halibut were unloaded.

In this scene, we can see many long wharves that jutted out into Boston harbor a hundred years ago and can still be seen today.  With fishing vessels lined up three or four deep at these wharves, it was possible to reach the shore by walking from deck to deck.  Wholesale fish dealers, steamship companies, and shipbuilders conducted business from there wharves, which constituted the heart of Boston's commercial life.

Faneuil Hall, built in 1742, can be seen in the foreground with its domed tower.  Known as "The Cradle of Liberty" because it was here that Bostonian's first rallied to support the cause of independence from Great Britain, Faneuil Hall housed Boston's central food market and public meeting hall.  After extensive renovations in the late 1970's, it re-opened as a marketplace and popular tourist attraction.
