History

In 1790 President George Washington and Washington city planner Pierre L'Enfant chose the site where the White House would eventually be built.  When it was decided that L'Enfant's design for a "president's palace" was too grandiose, a competition was held to find a more suitable design and Irish-born architect James Hoban won.  Although Hoban's design was only 25% the size of L'Enfant's design, the White House was still the largest house in the United States until after the Civil War.

Construction began in 1792 but it was 1800 before the first American president and his wife (John and Abigail Adams) moved into the house.

Despite being burned by the British during the War of 1812 and being completely gutted and renovated by President Harry Truman, the exterior walls of the White House have survived.

In this scene we imagine what the White House would have looked like from Lafayette Park circa 1900.
