History

Charles Town, as it was originally known, was founded in 1670 as the capital of the Carolina Colony. Located where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers empty into a wide harbor, Charleston quickly became one of the largest and most prosperous cities in colonial America. Through historic preservation, the city has managed to retain much of its early architectural flavor, with many of the stately homes built by cotton and rice planters still standing.

This image depicts the annual holiday boat parade. The grand homes in the back of the scene are the mansions of Charleston's Battery area. Fortifications protection Charleston harbor once stood here, but today the Battery is a grand boulevard for strolling and outdoor gatherings.
